CALM 10 / 20 Course Outline
The aim of Senior High School Career and Life Management (CALM), is to enable students to make well-informed, considered decisions and choices in all aspects of their lives and to develop behaviours and attitudes that contribute to the well being and respect of self and others, now and in the future. CALM is the core course for health literacy at the senior high school level in Alberta.
The aim of the CALM curriculum is articulated through three general outcomes:
1. Personal Choices
a. Students will apply and understanding of the emotional/psychological, intellectual, social, spiritual and physical dimensions of health – and the dynamic interplay of these factors – in managing personal well being.
2. Resource Choices
a. Students will make responsible decisions in the use of finances and other resources that reflect personal values and goals and demonstrate commitment to self and others.
3. Career and Life Choices
a. Students will develop and apply processes for managing personal, lifelong career development.
So....What’s in it for me?
Personal and Interpersonal Choices:
This section will teach you about the holistic aspects of health. You will examine the lifestyle choices necessary for improving and maintaining health and well-being. We will look at creative thinking and attempt to brainstorm how to solve problems in our own city! You will also look at interpersonal relationships by identifying expectations and issues within relationships. The knowledge, skills, and attributes you need to have great relationships will be explored. You will learn about responsible sexual decision-making, abstinence, sexually transmitted infections, contraception, and the consequences of sexual behaviour.
Career and Life Choices:
This unit will help you examine the career planning process and develop employability skills to help you find, acquire and maintain employment. You will have a chance to do some self-assessment, career exploration, decision making and action planning. You will be encouraged to look at a variety of careers and find out job availability and issues in the workplace. There will be a guest speaker come to talk to us about self employment too. You will also get the chance to experience your dream job first hand!
Financial Planning and Resource Choices:
This section will help you effectively manage your resources, particularly your finances. You will develop an understanding of financial planning, budgeting, living on your own, investment, credit and insurance. You will have an opportunity to apply your skills in a simulation unit where you will move out, find an apartment and buy a car, food, clothes, etc.
What You Can Expect:
All of the assignments will be able to be included in the major project – your personal portfolio. Plenty of class time will be given to insure your success! You can expect me to give you plenty of feedback and support you in the work you do.
